Yangshan Deepwater Port-Brief Information


Yangshan Deepwater Port is the core project of Shanghai international navigation center. As the first port built by China on sea islands, it is located in the area of Qiqu Islands, Shengsi, off the estuaries of Hangzhou Bay and Yangtze River, and composed of dozens of islands like Dayangshan Island and the Xiaoyangshan Island. Yangshan Deepwater Port lies 32 km. southeast of Luchaogang, Nanhui, Shanghai, 90 km. north of Beilun Port of Ninbo, and 45 nautical miles from the international navigation line, and is the a good deepwater port nearest to Shanghai.

Shanghai started the construction of Yangshan Deepwater Port in 2002. On December 10, 2005, the first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port was completed for opening. The first phase included three parts, i.e., the port operation area, Dong Hai Bridge, Luchaogang Supporting Area. (Refer to Sketch 12-1: Sketch Map of Planned Yangshan Deepwater Port)

1) The Port Operation Area. Five 70-100 thousand tonnage berths of the first phase have been built and come into operation, and the world newest generation of super-Panamanian containerships may anchor. The dock is 1600 meters long, 18 container bridge cranes have been installed, the annual handling capacity is over three million. TEUs, and the land area is 1.53 sq.km. The completion of the first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port has re-written the history of Shanghai, which did not have over 15 meters deep sea lanes and deepwater wharves, and present world biggest container ships may be received in all weathers for anchorage and operation.

(2) The Dong Hai Bridge. Being the longest sea bridge, it is 32.5 km long, starting from Luchaogang of Nanhui, Shanghai and ending at Xiaochengzishan Island of Qiqu Islands, Shengsi County, Zhejiang Province, and also links the Port Operation Area with the shore. The bridge was designed in accordance with the standards of two-way and six-lane expressway with Width of 31.5 m and standard a driving speed of 80km/h.

(3) Luchao Port Supporting Area, located near the landing point of the East Sea Bridge and relatively independent, mainly performs the function of providing Yangshan Deepwater Port Operation Area with supporting services and includes port inspection area, auxiliary operation area, dangerous goods operation area and comprehensive auxiliary facilities of water supply, electricity supply and telecommunication.

(4) Overall Planning of Yangshan Deepwater Port Operation Area. The second phase of Yangshan project will be completed at the end of 2006. The dock of Yangshan Port will be extended from 1600 m to 3000 m.; the storage area expanded from 0.87 min sq.m. to approx.1.4 min sq.m.; the number of cranes increased to 34 with thirteen 40ft double-lifting bridge cranes. By 2012, the dock will further be extended to over 10 km., the number of berths increased to over 30 with annual capacity of over 15 million TEUs.
